Maine Community College Scholarship Program

Community College Connection for High School Juniors

The Maine Community College Scholarship targets—

  • High school juniors who may be thinking about higher education but haven't yet made plans for going to college or paying for it.
  • High schools and technical schools below the state average for graduates going on to post-secondary education or or schools with a significant population of students who meet scholarship selection criteria.

More and more Maine jobs—particularly those offering good salaries and potential for advancement—are requiring more than a high school education. Yet today in Maine, only about 54 percent of high school students are going on to college. Many of those who are not going to college are academically capable and aspire to earn a college degree, but for a variety of reasons do not follow through and enroll. With financial assistance—and support through the college admissions process—we can help more Maine students make that important step into college.

Maximum award: $2,000 over 2 years

The scholarship award is $500 per semester—$1,000 per year—for a one-year program and a maximum of $2,000 for a two-year program, so long as the student continues to meet program requirements. Scholarship funds can be applied to tuition, fees, books, program-related equipment, and on-campus housing and are paid directly to the college. No funds will be paid or refunded to the scholarship recipient.

Participating high schools and technical centers/regions identify students to apply for the scholarship during their junior year. Schools work with these applicants throughout their junior year. In the fall of their senior year, schools decide which applicants to nominate for the scholarship and what order to assign remaining applicants as alternates. To receive a scholarship, students must be both nominated by their school and accepted into a Maine Community College program of study.

Scholarship staff provides help to scholarship nominees and alternates throughout the college application process and the application process for federal financial aid.
